The Babbitt Brothers Foundation Viola Legacy Award: Honoring Randy Beaumont
We are honored to recognize Randy Beaumont as our 2025 Babbitt Brothers Foundation Viola Legacy Award.
Randy Beaumont
Creative Flagstaff is honored to recognize Randy Beaumont as the 2025 Babbitt Brothers Foundation Viola Legacy Award recipient. Randy passed away in November 2024. During Randy’s 40 years in Flagstaff, he worked tirelessly for the arts and helped to keep Flagstaff Light Opera Company (FLOC), which later became Flagstaff Music Theatre (FMT), moving forward with each show. Randy’s love of theater and using his hands meant that there was always a stunning set for each show, sometimes even with standout pieces like a flying helicopter!
Randy was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Bellevue, Washington. Randy gained his love of music from his mother, who played a concert-level cello and in later life a violinist with chamber music groups. At Whitman College, he was told by his fraternity buddies that he was a monotone. This was proved wrong when he began to sing in the church choir in Ama, Michigan. He earned a PhD in Chemistry and taught at Alma College. We moved to Flagstaff in 1983 where he immediately joined the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany choir and sang in it for forty years. He enjoyed working with his hands and built a number of wooden objects for his three children. He joined the cast of one of the first Gilbert & Sullivan operettas produced by the Flagstaff Light Opera Company (FLOC) and appeared in almost every play they produced for a number of years. He served on the Board of Directors for FLOC and Flagstaff Music Theatre (FMT), enjoying this work for about twenty-five years. When they needed a place to store costumes and build sets, he bought a building on 6th Ave. and provided free use of these spaces until his death in 2024. Several of his largest pieces included a “Dolly Trolley” originally made for Hello Dolly which appeared in several parades with FMT folks, and a beautiful wooden boat made for Pirates of Penzance. The boat was made to be seaworthy so many afternoons were enjoyed in the boat on Lake Mary. Randy is remembered for his happy personality, his care and friendship for so many people, singing and acting along with the beautiful, creative sets he designed and built for so many years.
