Announcing the 2020 Art & Science Fund Recipients
39 Organizations Awarded $340,000 from Art & Science Fund
On Thursday, August 20, 2020, Flagstaff Arts Council announced 39 Flagstaff nonprofits that were awarded a total of $340,000 through it’s annual Art & Science Fund General Operating Support and Project grant programs.
36 recipients received General Operating Support (GOS) awards. Four GOS recipients also received project awards. A total of seven awards were made for a variety of innovation and capacity-building projects ranging from bringing in professional violinist, Cindy Lan to perform with members of the Orchestra of Northern Arizona to developing online programs at Theatrikos Theatre Company and Willow Bend Environmental Education Center
“Our annual Art & Science Fund grant programs are the biggest way that Flagstaff Arts Council supports the creative sector,” says Executive Director Jonathan Stone. “Especially in these trying times, we are thrilled to be work with the City of Flagstaff to make these grants possible.”
“Since 2012, over $3,000,000 has been allocated to dozens of nonprofits from the Bed, Board, and Beverage (BBB) tax program,” states City of Flagstaff, Beautification, Arts & Sciences Manager Eliza Kretzmann. “These are dedicated by the voters of Flagstaff specifically for art, science, and cultural enhancement. These grantees have demonstrated that they are aligned with the mission of the Art & Science fund and that they provide an important public benefit.”
Flagstaff Arts Council is contracted by the City of Flagstaff to be the Art, Science, and Culture Agency and to administer Art & Science fund grant programs. Each year, through the City budgeting process, a portion of the voter-dedicated Art & Science BBB funds are allocated to grant programs. This year, $360,000 was allocated. With this announcement, $340,000 of the $360,000 is awarded. Another $20,000 will be awarded in the coming months for projects specifically designed to help the creative sector continue to adapt to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
General Operating Support
General Operating Support Grants provide unrestricted general operating support for nonprofits and other nonprofit sponsored entities whose primary missions are to serve the arts, cultural equity, preservation, or awareness, or present science programming to the public.

Innovation & Capacity Projects
Innovation & Capacity Grants provide flexible funds to support a specific project designed to introduce a new program or experience, prove a concept, or build operational capacity in the art, science, and cultural sectors in greater Flagstaff. In most cases, projects are only eligible for one Innovation & Capacity grant.
Fiscal Year 2021 Innovation & Capacity Project Awards
- Boys and Girls Club of Flagstaff – $4,000
- Club Snapshot is a program that exposes club members between the ages of 7-18 on how to use, handle, hold, and take pictures on basic cameras up to DSLR cameras. It also exposes club members to how to turn a passion into a career by introducing local professional photographers to class to speak and teach members how to take photos in new and exciting ways.
- Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra – $3,000
- FSO’s Mother Earth concert is a socially conscious project focused on our environment, including climate change and the public health ramifications involved. It will take place on April 16, 2021, with a performance of The Creation, a monumental orchestral masterpiece by Franz Joseph Haydn performed by the FSO and featuring The Master Chorale of Flagstaff and the Shrine of the Ages choir from Northern Arizona University. The Creation musically represents the creation of our planet and each of the elements that comprise our environment.
- Four Corners Fiber Collective – $4,000
- This project supports the production of the Flag Wool & Fiber Festival. The festival connects the public to the rich cultural history of regional fiber arts. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of the fiber arts process, leaving the festival with an immersive farm to fiber experience.
- MOCAF – $8,000
- Grant funding will be used in this first year to solidify the Creative of the Month concept and generate momentum and awareness that will allow each artist we pick increasing exposure and bolster our ability to find less known artists in Flagstaff and surrounding areas.
- Orchestra Northern Arizona – $1,000
- ONA has a goal of engaging its community and its musicians by providing opportunities to work with professional artists. Cindy Lan, a professional violist, holds a Masters of Music from the Eastman School of Music, one of the premiere music schools in the United States. ONA will bring Ms. Lan to Flagstaff for a week in February 2021 to perform the Telemann Viola Concerto in G Major.
- Theatrikos Theatre Company – $12,000
- Live from the Theatre Basement (wt), both podcast and streamed performances of staged readings will be presented bi-weekly (maybe even weekly); then distributed via a web-library such as Libsyn or Blurbrry, thus creating on-call entertainment to the community and beyond. This opportunity lets people dabble in the arts, test the water, see if they like it, before they dive in to possibly attend a live performance.
- Willow Bend Environmental Education Center – $3,000
- This project will train staff, purchase appropriate materials and software, and produce a number of online environmental programs. The programs will reach a new audience that does not enjoy or utilize our face-to-face programs.
