Digital Resource Center Jay Gallegos designs electrical box in Sunnyside

Made possible by the City of Flagstaff’s Beautification and Public Art Commision, “Welcome to Sunnyside” is a public art project celebrating the vibrancy of one of Flagstaff’s most beloved neighborhoods. Installed on the traffic signal box adjacent to the crosswalk at Fourth St. and Third Ave., the design pays homage to the cultural diversity of the Sunnyside community by incorporating both cultural and natural motifs.  From a distance the central symbol resembles a sun or basket, which for pedestrians traversing the crosswalk reveals itself  to be composed of radial text reading “Sunnyside”, with the Spanish words “Pueblo Unido” (People United) at its center. On either side of the box pedestrians and motorists alike are greeted with the Spanish word “Bienvenidos” from the south façade and the Diné word “Yá’át’ééh” from the north, both translating to “Welcome.”  Further design elements serve as abstract representations of the Ponderosa pines covering the sacred San Francisco peaks.

A local to Flagstaff, Jay has long been active in various projects within the community. Including community DJ work at Radio Sunnyside, and participation in grassroots-driven elder storytelling and youth cinema projects. He currently serves Creative Flagstaff as Digital Resource Center Coordinator at Coconino Center for the Arts.
