Announcing the Winners of the #MaskResponsibly Art Contest

The Flagstaff Arts Council is excited to announce the winners of the Please Stay, Play Distance & Mask Responsibly Art Contest.

The jury included City of Flagstaff Vice Mayor Adam Shimoni and Council Member Regina Salas, Coconino County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Liz Archuleta and Supervisor Art Babbott, and Kathy Bryant who represented the Flagstaff Arts Council Board of Directors.

The first place prize of $500 was awarded to Colin Kubarych for his entry, The Answerable Question. Dawn Baker was awarded the second place prize of $250 for her poem, Staying At Home At 73. The third place prize of $100 was awarded to Rain Varney for her entry PPEople. Alyssa Williams was awarded the  youth prize of $50 for her graphic design piece Make the Neighborhood Friendly. 

34 entries were submitted to the contest from all over the state of Arizona. The entries submitted represented a wide variety of creative works including painting, drawing, dance, ceramic work, and even a music video. Of the 34 entries, 3 were youth entries.

First place winner Colin Kubarych said of his enty “This work is a reflection on the uncertain times facing our society during the pandemic. The solutions to our longevity are through responsible social action…masking up, social distancing, shelter-in-place, hand washing, etc…and it is on each of us to look out for the other.”

The Flagstaff Arts Council thanks the creative community of Flagstaff and Arizona at large for participating in this contest. FAC would also like to thank the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County for their support of this contest.
